Fare Cinema 2022 – Italian Renaissance

Fare Cinema 2022 has a special section entitled Italian Renaissance, devoted to some of the leading stars in this great new season of Italian film, which is enjoying renewed and growing attention by film critics and international festivals.

For festival audiences abroad, the MyMovies platform, for one week, will be showing five short films by five established and emerging Italian directors: a selection of titles that offers a fresh and transversal look at contemporary reality, telling five very different stories. Thanks to the great variety of styles and themes, these works successfully paint a colourful and complex image of the world we live in, using original and innovative cinematographic language, even when reworking techniques and models of the past.

Gabriele Mainetti, who won over audiences with his highly successful debut film ‘Lo chiamavano Jeeg Robot’ (Call Me Jeeg) and with the follow-up ‘Freaks Out’, will feature in Fare Cinema with his sixth short, ‘Tiger Boy’. Sydney Sibilia, creator of the successful trilogy ‘I Can Quite Whenever’, instead participates with ‘Oggi gira così’.

These will be followed by two original animated shorts: ‘Sugarlove’ by Laura Luchetti, winner of the Corto d’Argento in 2019 as best short film for animation, and ‘Esca Viva’ by Susanna Nicchiarelli, winning director of the 2021 ‘Nastro dell’Anno’ with ‘Miss Marx’.

The festival concludes with ‘Il mio dovere di sposa’ (My Duty as a Bride), one of the nine short stories that make up the collective work 9×10 Novanta, produced in 2014 to celebrate the 90th birthday of the Istituto Luce. The film is made by Claudio Giovannesi, a well-established director on the national and international scene, winner of the award for Best Screenplay at the 2019 Berlin Film Festival with ‘La paranza dei bambini’.

Organised by Fondazione Cinema per Roma, each of the five directors also sits down for an in-depth video interview with Mario Sesti. The interviews begin with an introductory conversation with Pappi Corsicato, drawing on his vast experience spanning thirty years. The interviews will remain online with unlimited free access on the Italiana Vimeo channel.
