Piazze [In]visibili | Piazza Benedetto Brin, La Spezia

[…] A magnificent huge fountain was built in the piazza, with a marble basin and an obelisk inlaid with mosaic by the great sculptor Mirko, imbued with so much mystery and pride that it’s hard to determine whether it’s truly beautiful or simply outré.
However, for many generations there was no child without a boat, no youth without an adversary, and no girl without a suitor that would be thrown in there. In summer, vagrants came from all
over Italy to bathe in it, and on August bank holiday, the priest would organize a fishing game in it. I’ve used the past tense so far, but the piazza is still there; the fact is that the mighty arsenal is gone, along with its mighty ships, its labourers and engineers, its intentions and its reasons, and even its quarter. And the piazza is now a great exotic dormant being that dreams, and speaks in mysterious languages in its dreams.

Piazza Benedetto Brin, che fu un ammiraglio costruttore, e
edificò il più grande arsenale militare del regno, e intorno ci mise una città, una città come gli sembrava nella sua testa che dovesse essere, e la popolò di popoli estranei tenuti assieme dal loro lavoro, costruire le navi più potenti del mondo. Al centro della città ci mise il quartiere dei lavoratori del suo arsenale e in mezzo al quartiere una piazza con il suo nome. E la piazza divenne un teatro, una fantasmagoria, una jungla e un campo di Marte, perché era l’ombelico di tutto il quartiere e la scena di ciascuno. […] La piazza c’è ancora; il fatto è che non c’è più il possente arsenale, non ci sono più le sue possenti navi, e i suoi operai e i suoi ingegneri, le sue intenzioni e men che meno le sue ragioni, il suo quartiere. E la piazza ora è un grande e esotico essere assopito, che sogna, e sognando parla in lingue di mistero.
