Piazze [In]visibili | Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere, Rome

Although I’m almost always moving when I’m in this piazza, I can also imagine myself still, in the exact spot of the photographer. […] There will be an old lady framed in one of the windows of a palazzo, above the pharmacy, at almost the same height as the four popes on the balustrade, who normally watches over the mass of people beneath her home, as if she too were a statue. […] What will that lady think, now that there’s nothing to see but the soldiers, the popes, the faded women alongside Mary in the mosaic on the façade of the Basilica, the wolf heads from whose jaws water no longer flows? What will she think of the weeds – from the photo, I can’t tell whether they’re grass or a kind of moss – growing between the cobblestones? Will their unfamiliar presence make her think of the absence of everything?

In questa piazza io sono quasi sempre in movimento, ma posso anche immaginarmi ferma, precisamente nella posizione del fotografo. […]In un palazzo sopra la farmacia, incorniciata in una delle finestre, ci sarà una signora anziana – quasi alla stessa altezza dei quattro pontefici sulla balaustra – che normalmente sorveglia la moltitudine sotto casa sua, come fosse una statua anche lei. […]. Cosa pensa, quella signora, ora che non c’è nulla da vedere a parte i militari, i pontefici, le donne sbiadite che fiancheggiano Maria nel mosaico sulla facciata della Basilica, le teste di lupo dalle cui fauci non cade più l’acqua? Cosa pensa dell’erbaccia […] che cresce e si sparge fra i sampietrini? Le fa pensare, la presenza insolita di quell’erbaccia, all’assenza di tutto?
