Piazza or terrace? Brushing up against the steep descent to the
plain, Anghiari’s piazza-terrace resembles a springboard, and
Garibaldi a judge about to give the starting order. The
commander’s hand is supposed to be pointing towards Rome:
Rome or death, but in that case death because his hand is
pointing towards Milan. Why? There are several possible
reasons: for balance, due to a mistake, a twist of destiny, an antiGaribaldian, or a latter-day Guelph, a papist disguised as an
artist? Or perhaps nobody noticed? Who knows. […]
