“I’ve always wondered which is the best side to enter Piazza San Marco and admire its Basilica, which like most of Venice is harlequinesque in character. Indeed, it was built from the plunder of Eastern palaces. Each returning ship brought (or rather, had to transport) statues, columns and paving whose purpose was to embellish the city. Saint Mark’s Basilica is the most flamboyant example of a patchwork of thefts, a collage of styles and materials, removed from their original context and functions, which make it unique and inimitable. This juxtaposition, adorned with gilded mosaics, overlooks a massive space with a magical view. […]”
