Matera is a city on a rocky outcrop in the region of Basilicata, in southern Italy. The ancient neighbourhoods, known as sassi, are a series of grottoes carved out of limestone, teetering on the edge of a ravine. Matera is stunning so while its history and uniqueness makes it stand out, its sheer beauty is also reason enough to come here.
The Italian Embassy Cultural Centre continues its collaboration with Bell’Italia 88 to bring to the Indian public many of our country’s attractions. One city will be the focus each month, with a walking tour illuminating its most important monuments, followed by a talk including a visit to a museum or a historical building.
